Ph.D., Aalborg University, 1995
Dorte Hammersh°i was born in 1965 in Denmark. She studied electrical engineering at Aalborg University 1984-89, and received her M. Sc. E. E. degree with a specialization in biomedical engineering. During her studies she worked periodically as an engineering assistant at an SME developing simple communication and control units for severely disabled persons. After graduating - and after Ż year of adventurous journey through South America - she started working at Aalborg University (as research assistant 1990-95, teaching assistant and technical amanuensis 1995, assistant professor 1995-99, and associate professor 1999-).
As an associate professor, Dorte Hammersh°i is involved in various teaching and research activities. In her first position (research council grant 1990-92) she studied the fundamental principles of the binaural recording and playback technique, with a focus on the identification of the relevant transfer functions, the analysis and processing of these, and the performance obtained in reproduction. In the subsequent project (research council grant 1992-95) she studied the potential in using measured outer ear transfer functions for binaural auralization. She worked also as the site manager of a cooperation project with German and Italian partners (EU grant 1992-95), which focused on DSP implementations of binaural synthesis in dynamic environments with auditory and tactile feedback. Later, Dorte Hammersh°i has worked with measurement methods for noise from sources close to the ear, projects that aim at obtaining improved measurement methods for assessment of the risk of hearing damage, and for improved methods for calibration of audiometric headphones.
Dorte Hammersh°i also teaches within the electrical engineering programme, primarily as a lecturer and project supervisor in the acoustics specialization programme, for which she has also served as coordinator on several semesters. Her course teaching includes fundamentals of acoustics, human sound perception, auralization and VR sound, and recording and reproduction techniques.
Dorte Hammersh°i has several memberships of confidence, among other she is a member of the Research Council for Technology and Production (2005-), Technical Committee of Telecommunication Information Science and Technology, COST - European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research (2005-), Academy of Technical Sciences (2005), board member of the Department of Acoustics (2001-), and is a staff representative of the cooperation committee at the Institute of Electronic Systems (2001-). She is also a co-founder of AM:3D, which develop industrial applications of binaural synthesis (positional sound).
Research fieldsBinaural recording, synthesis and reproduction, noise from sources close to the ears, headphone calibration, temporary threshold shifts, oto-acoustic emission, binaural auralization.
